Copenhagen aims to Become The 'Capital of Sustainable Meetings'

5 January 2010

COP15 has set the standard for future climate conferences and other international meetings, having been certified as the world's first sustainable, international political summit. The ambition now is to make Copenhagen the world leader within sustainable meetings.

Copenhagen had the pleasure of hosting the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) from 7th to the 18th December 2009 and while more than 120 heads of State and 15,000 delegates from 192 nations gathered at the Conference, Copenhagen achieved the highest ranking in the European Green City Index.

Following COP15, the white book, Copenhagen Sustainable Meetings Protocol (CSMP) has been commissioned by a consortium made up of the Foreign Ministry, VisitDenmark, Copenhagen Council, Novo Nordisk, Wonderful Copenhagen, MCI Copenhagen and Ovation Denmark. This white book will be presented to the UN by the Foreign Ministry, with the recommendation that future climate conferences and other international meetings be developed along the guidelines laid out in Copenhagen and in the hope that this will cement Copenhagen's position as a globally leading sustainable meetings destination.

The white book will document how COP15 was organised and held based on sustainable principles, and how it became the first political, international summit ever certified according to an international standard. The white book is produced by consultancy firm MCI Sustainability Services, but a third party, the Dansk Standard Certificering has, during November and December, monitored COP15 according to the international standard BS8901. This standard is also the target for the Olympic Games in 2012 in London.

Ovation Denmark was proud to be involved in COP15 as a nominated DMC. Henrik Dyhr, MD at Ovation Denmark commented "There is no doubt that Copenhagen is ready for the meeting of tomorrow and we are proud to be able to offer DMC services in a city honoured for its world class sustainability offering"
