Ovation Global DMC MD Padraic Gilligan presented an update on Pharma Codes in Europe at the recent European Meetings and Events Conference in London in April last. Knowledge of the complex regulations that govern how pharmaceutical companies interact with physicians is essential for meetings and events professionals as the Pharmaceutical Industry makes up such a large proportion of meetings business globally. While global organisations such as the IFPIA (International Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry Associations) have created over-arching codes applicable in all territories, there are subtle differences between the codes and regulations that apply in each country. This means that professionals must equip themselves with the most comprehensive knowledge possible.
Gilligan's presentation outlines why the regulations came into existance in the first place and surveys the main provisions of the IFPIA and the EFPIA (European Ferderation of Pharmaceutical Industry Associations)codes as well as "highlights" from the individual codes of some key European territories.
